Innovation NOW – Henry Ford Part IV

Posted on 23 October 2009

Some of us remember a time before cell phones (me yes; CarolAnn no). A lot has changed over the last 5, 10, 20 years; it’s pretty amazing. We’ve talked inspiration, now let’s talk innovation. Innovations often (usually) come about when we meet a need for all or a portion of the public. I would argue (and others with more experience than me have argued) that social media arose from the human need for social interaction in a world with fewer and fewer physical societies. It meets a need.

The more urgent the need, the quicker innovations happen. A good number of medical innovations come from the battlefield because there are urgent and pressing needs. Sometimes we can create urgency; JFK did it with the mission to the moon.

Another thing to keep in mind is that innovations generated by fulfilling a need often (almost always) lead to people making a lot of money. This is an awesome thing and something we’ll talk about more in later posts and in my newsletter.

I'm so glad some invented puppy slippers! Now I can swim in a lined pool without tearing it up!

What are your favorite innovations? Where do you think we’ll be in the next 5 or 10 years? Leave a comment and let me know. Have an amazing, innovative and inspirational day!
